Energy StarcertifiedTwo Thousand Feet Changes the Math
Asheville sits above 2,000 feet in the Blue Ridge, and that single fact reorders everything a window has to do here. It makes this the coolest market Windows USA serves in North Carolina by a clear margin. Drive down the mountain toward the Piedmont and the priority list flips: there, the long humid cooling season dominates and a window earns its keep mostly by keeping solar heat outside. Up here the heating season is longer, the nights are colder, and the first question is how much warmth the house is losing through its glass.
That is a different specification problem, and it is worth being clear about which part of the window solves it. Solar control lives in the coating on the glass. Heat retention lives in the whole assembly — the glass, the gas between the panes, and the frame surrounding both. A window that is excellent at one and indifferent to the other is a window built for somewhere else. Regional climate records are published by the National Weather Service (opens in a new tab) office covering western North Carolina.
Our answer runs in layers rather than resting on one feature. Frames and sashes are extruded from multi-chambered virgin vinyl, so heat trying to cross the profile has to work through a series of sealed air pockets instead of running straight through solid material — and unlike aluminum, vinyl does not act as a thermal bridge that turns cold at the frame on a January night. Argon fill between the panes slows conduction in whichever direction it is headed. The Cardinal Low-E 366 (opens in a new tab) triple-layer coating insulates well enough that the interior surface of the glass stays warmer on a cold morning, which is what keeps you from feeling a chill standing next to a closed window. ENERGY STAR certified options are available across the line, and ENERGY STAR is plain about the return: "Replacing old windows with ENERGY STAR certified windows lowers household energy bills by an average of up to 13 percent nationwide when replacing single-pane windows. Lower energy consumption also reduces greenhouse gas emissions from power plants and homes."

The Swing Between Morning and Afternoon
Anyone who has lived a year in the mountains knows the daily pattern: a cold start that has you reaching for a jacket, and an afternoon warm enough that you have forgotten where you left it. Elevation produces a wider daily temperature range than the Piedmont sees, and it does it across most of the year rather than in one season.
A house feels that swing through its windows before it feels it anywhere else. In the morning, cold glass pulls warmth out of the room next to it, which is why the room facing north or shaded by a ridge never quite reaches the thermostat setting no matter how long the heat runs. By afternoon the sun has come around and the same house is dumping heat into whichever rooms are catching it. Old single-glazed sash amplifies both halves, because a single pane is close to the outdoor temperature at all times and simply hands the swing straight through.
The daily cycling is also hard on the window as an object. Materials expand as they warm and contract as they cool, and doing that every single day for decades is what eventually opens the joint between the sashes and breaks the seal at the edge of an insulated glass unit — the failure that shows up as permanent haze between the panes. Two details are built against exactly that. The sashes interlock where they meet rather than resting against a strip of weatherstrip that relaxes over twenty years of cycling, which puts one continuous seal at the joint where ordinary windows leak first. And Intercept® Ultra spacers hold the two panes as a single airtight assembly designed to move with the temperature instead of fatiguing against it.
Weather That Changes From One Street to the Next
In most cities you can talk about "the climate" and mean one thing. Asheville does not work that way. The terrain here is folded, and two houses a quarter mile apart can sit at meaningfully different elevations, on opposite sides of a ridge, with completely different exposure to the sun. One gets full southern light from ten in the morning; the other is shaded by the slope behind it until noon and runs cooler all year. Both are in the same neighborhood, and they do not want the same thing from their windows.
This is why the orientation question is more than a textbook exercise in Asheville. Which way a wall faces, and what is standing in front of it, changes which specification actually matters on that wall. The U.S. Department of Energy (opens in a new tab) reduces the relationship to a grid, and it is genuinely worth walking through before you order rather than after:
[Consumer Guide to Energy-Efficient Windows (opens in a new tab)]
The practical version is a conversation at your house, not a chart. A representative standing in each room can see which elevations take the afternoon sun, which are shaded by the mountain, and which face the direction the cold comes from — and that is the level at which the decision is actually made.
Original Wood Sash in a Bungalow City
Asheville's early-twentieth-century building boom left it with one of the better collections of Arts-and-Crafts-era housing in the Southeast, and the bungalows in Montford, West Asheville, Kenilworth, and the neighborhoods around them are a large part of why people love the place. Many of them still carry their original wood sash.
Those windows were beautifully made, and after a hundred years they are usually in the same condition. They have been painted shut at least once. The cords or balances gave out decades ago, so the sash either will not stay up or will not move at all. The glazing putty has hardened and dropped out in places. Bottom rails have taken a century of condensation and started to go soft. And every one of them is single-glazed, which means that on a February night the glass is very nearly the outdoor temperature and the room beside it never quite catches up.
Replacing them raises the same question these houses always raise, which is whether the result will still look like the house. That part is a choice you make rather than a compromise you accept. Windows built at our Arkansas plant can be ordered with Colonial, Prairie, Queen Anne, or Farmhouse grid patterns, or with no grid at all — and on a Craftsman bungalow the Prairie pattern, with its grid confined to the perimeter of the glass, generally reads far closer to the original intent than a Colonial grid would. It is worth settling at the estimate, in front of the actual elevation, because the pattern is built into the window at the factory rather than applied to it afterward.
Nothing Standard About a Mountain House
Beyond the look, there is the fit. A house that has stood for a century on a slope has settled, and it has not settled evenly. Framing has moved with a hundred years of seasons, previous owners have remodeled around whatever was already in the wall, and additions have been built onto houses that were never square to begin with. The result is that the openings are not true, no two on the same elevation are guaranteed to match, and a catalog dimension stopped describing them long ago.
So nothing we install comes off a shelf. A representative measures every opening in the house individually during the in-home estimate, and those measurements — not the nearest stock size — are what the plant builds to. The alternative, which is packing out the difference with shims and hiding it behind wider trim, costs you glass area and makes a tall original window look squat from the street. Water gets the same deliberate treatment: weep holes are placed in the frame so anything that reaches it drains back outside rather than sitting against wood that will eventually rot. The full specification is here.
Mild Summers, Strong Sun
The summer here is the reason a lot of people moved to Asheville in the first place. It is genuinely cooler than the Piedmont, and the cooling season is shorter. What it is not is dim. Sunshine at elevation is strong, and ultraviolet is the component of daylight that works on a house without ever feeling like it is doing anything — it needs no heat to do it, and a comfortable seventy-eight-degree afternoon delivers it just as efficiently as a scorching one. The CDC (opens in a new tab) tracks the Average Daily Dose of Ultraviolet (UV) light (opens in a new tab) across the country.

The damage lands in three places. It reaches the people in the room — the International Ultraviolet Association (opens in a new tab) notes that ordinary window glass is no barrier to UVA, which the Skin Cancer Foundation (opens in a new tab) identifies as a main cause of premature skin aging. It bleaches what is in the room, steadily lightening furniture, fabrics, flooring, and artwork & photos (opens in a new tab) on the sunny side — which in a bungalow with original floors and built-in cabinetry is not a loss you can simply replace. And it works on the window itself, since ultraviolet wavelengths penetrate solid materials (opens in a new tab) and unprotected vinyl suffers mechanical, physical and chemical degradation from solar radiation (opens in a new tab) that shows up as cracking, chalking (opens in a new tab), color shift, and lost strength.
Both halves are answered in the build. The UV inhibitor is compounded into the vinyl rather than sprayed on the surface, so the elevation catching the sun does not chalk and stop matching the shaded side of the house. The triple-layer coating screens out 95% of the ultraviolet that would otherwise be working on your floors and furnishings while the room stays bright — a better answer than the tinted glass often specified in sunny markets, which solves the problem by removing the daylight you wanted in the first place.
Serving Asheville, Arden, Weaverville, and the Surrounding Mountains
Installation crews work throughout Asheville (opens in a new tab) and the communities around it, including Arden, Fletcher, Weaverville, Black Mountain, and Hendersonville. The housing across that area covers a lot of ground — an original bungalow in West Asheville, a mid-century house in Weaverville, a newer build in Arden or Fletcher, and everything from cabins to substantial older homes scattered up the valleys around Black Mountain and Hendersonville.
Every one of those jobs runs the same way: measured at your house, manufactured at ours in Arkansas, installed by professional installation crews. In terrain where access is often awkward and no two houses sit the same way on their lot, having one company accountable for the job from the first measurement through the installation is worth more than it sounds.
What You Are Buying When You Buy From the Manufacturer
Most window quotes in this market carry margins that have nothing to do with the window. An importer takes a cut, a distributor takes a cut, and a dealer takes a cut, each one stacked on the last before the number ever reaches your kitchen table. Windows USA is the manufacturer and the seller in one company, coordinating every job from consultation through installation, which takes those layers out of the arithmetic and leaves exactly one business accountable for the product and the workmanship both.
That is what gives the transferable lifetime limited warranty its weight. It is issued by the company that extruded the vinyl and built the units to the measurements taken at your address, and it follows the house to the next owner if you sell. Nearly 60 years in business and more than 200,000 homeowners served stand behind it. It starts with a free in-home estimate: every opening measured, the orientation and glass questions worked out room by room, and one written price to take your time with.

Window Replacement Questions in Asheville
It depends on the house, and mountain housing varies more than most. The number follows how many openings you are replacing, how large they are, the styles and glass you choose, and what the crew finds behind the casing once the old sash is out — a 1920s bungalow with twelve original wood double-hungs is a different job from a newer house in Arden with ten. Nothing is priced over the phone. A representative measures every opening during a free in-home estimate, and the quote is factory-direct because we build what we install.
Asheville sits high enough that insulation leads and solar control follows, which is the reverse of most of our southern markets. Multi-chambered vinyl frames interrupt heat trying to escape through the profile, argon fill slows it through the glass, and Cardinal Low-E 366 glass insulates well enough that the interior surface stays warmer on a cold morning while still blocking 95% of ultraviolet light. Intercept® Ultra spacers keep the unit airtight through the freeze-and-thaw cycling that mountain nights and afternoons produce. ENERGY STAR certified options are available across the line. See the build.
ENERGY STAR reports household energy bills falling by an average of up to 13 percent nationwide when single-pane windows are replaced with certified ones. The heating season here is longer and colder than anywhere else in our North Carolina footprint, so more of that saving arrives through the furnace or heat pump than through the air conditioner. Houses still running original single-glazed wood sash stand to recover the most, because a single pane is very nearly no barrier at all on a cold night.
A representative visits the house, measures each opening individually, and reviews styles, glass, hardware, and grid patterns with you at no charge. Nothing comes from stock sizes — every unit is manufactured to your measurements at our Arkansas plant, then installed by professional installation crews. Old sash is removed, new units set, sealed, and checked for operation, and the site cleaned before we go. The finished work carries a transferable lifetime limited warranty. Our process page covers each stage.
We install throughout Asheville and the surrounding area, including Arden, Fletcher, Weaverville, Black Mountain, and Hendersonville. Installation crews work markets across the rest of the state as well, which the North Carolina page sets out, and the locations page shows the full company footprint. If you are in one of the smaller mountain communities between those towns, call and ask rather than assuming we do not reach you.
