Double-hung windows are the most popular window style in America. Windows USA® uses virgin vinyl, brand-new PVC with no recycled scrap mixed in and the highest grade available. That means better insulation, longer life, and a window that holds its color and shape for decades without warping or fading.
Is a Double-Hung Window Right for Your Home?
Most replacement projects start here, and for good reason: if the windows coming out are single-hung, double-hung, or sliders, a double-hung window drops into the architecture the house was designed with. It is the right choice when:
- You want ventilation you can fine-tune. Two operating sashes let you open the top, the bottom, or both — exhausting warm air high while drawing cooler air low, something a fixed or single-operating window cannot do.
- Cleaning matters. Both sashes tilt into the room, so second-storey exterior glass gets cleaned from inside the house.
- The house has traditional or transitional lines. Colonial, farmhouse, ranch, craftsman — the double-hung’s proportions are what those styles were drawn around.
- You want proven hardware. Flush-mounted tilt latches and nearly invisible auto locks keep the sight lines clean and the sash secure.
There are rooms where a different style wins. Over a kitchen sink or anywhere you cannot easily reach the sash, the crank operation of a casement window is easier to live with, and a casement’s compression seal makes it the tightest-sealing operating window we build. If you want ventilation during rain, the top-hinged awning configuration keeps water out with the window open. And where a wall opens onto a patio or deck, a sliding patio door does what no window can — though we fit those as part of a window project rather than on their own.
Every one of these is custom-manufactured to the opening it will fill at our factory in Hot Springs, Arkansas, from virgin vinyl, with the same glass package: Cardinal Low-E 366, argon fill, and Intercept® spacers. Price follows the project: how many openings you are replacing, their sizes, and the glass and grid options you choose. Because Windows USA manufactures every window at our own Arkansas plant and sells factory-direct, there is no importer or dealer margin stacked into the number. The figure itself comes from a free in-home estimate, where a consultant measures each opening and prices the job in writing.
Both sashes tilt inward. Release the tilt latches, lean the sash toward you, and clean the exterior glass from inside the room — no ladder, no leaning out of a second-storey opening. This is the feature homeowners with older single-hung or painted-shut windows notice first.
Ours are ENERGY STAR certified for the South Central and Southern climate zones. The assembly works as a system: Cardinal Low-E 366 glass rejects solar heat and blocks 95% of ultraviolet light, argon gas between the panes slows conduction, Intercept® spacers keep the unit airtight, and the multi-chambered virgin-vinyl frame interrupts thermal transfer through the profile itself. Virgin vinyl is PVC extruded from brand-new resin, never from recycled or reground scrap. Recycled vinyl mixes formulations of unknown age and quality, so color, strength, and UV protection can vary from one piece to the next, and it is more likely to yellow, turn brittle, or warp. Starting from new material means every frame gets the same formulation, with its UV inhibitors mixed evenly all the way through.
In a single-hung window only the bottom sash moves. In a double-hung window both sashes operate — open the top to exhaust warm air, the bottom to draw in cooler air, or tilt both in for cleaning. The double operation is why this style dominates American replacement projects.
