Why Replace an Aging Patio Door With the Windows?

The patio door is usually the largest single piece of glass in the house, and the old aluminum sliders that came with many Southern homes are the leakiest thing in the wall: single-pane glass, a conductive metal frame, a flip latch for security, and rollers that gave up years ago. The replacement is built like the windows around it. The frame is fusion-welded, multi-chambered vinyl on an assembled 4 ¾” frame — no warping, no corrosion, no repainting. The glass is a ⅞” tempered insulated unit, with a glass riser on the fixed side so the sight lines match across both panels. The panel rides on an adjustable dual brass roller system, which is the difference between a door that glides for years and one that needs a shoulder behind it. And it locks with an exterior key lock backed by two galvanized steel reinforcements at the meeting rail.
