Energy StarcertifiedBig Brutus Is Not the Only Thing Here That Outlasted Its Era
Southeast of town, out past West Mineral, a sixteen-story electric shovel stands in the middle of flat country where it finished working in 1974. Big Brutus is the region's landmark now, but it is really a monument to what built these towns: the shallow coal seams of the Cherokee-Crawford field, the deep-shaft and strip mines that worked them, and the immigrant families who came from a dozen countries to do it. Pittsburg, Frontenac, Girard, and the smaller camps around them all grew in that boom, and they built housing fast to keep up with it.
Those houses are still standing, and a great many of them are still wearing their original windows. A wood-sash single-pane window from the early 1900s was a good product for its time and a genuinely bad one for a modern energy bill. It is one layer of glass held in place with putty, hung on cords and weights, in a frame that has spent a century absorbing humidity, drying out, swelling, and shrinking again. The sash sticks. The putty has cracked and fallen away in places. The cords have often broken, so the window is either painted shut or propped open with whatever was handy.
Storm windows were the twentieth century's answer to that, and on many houses here they still hang outside the original sash. They help a little, and they hide the real problem, which is that the primary window stopped being an air barrier decades ago. Replacing the unit outright is not a cosmetic upgrade on a house like that. It is the first time the opening has been properly sealed since it was cut.
The Wet Corner of a Dry State
Kansas has a reputation for dry, wind-scoured prairie, and it is earned across most of the state. It is not earned here. Southeast Kansas is the humid end of Kansas, sitting on the edge of the Ozark border country, and it takes noticeably more rain and carries noticeably more summer humidity than the plains west of it. Local normals and records are published by the National Weather Service (opens in a new tab), and what they establish is a straightforward point about priorities: in this market, water is at least as important as temperature.
Windows fail at water long before they fail at heat, and they nearly always fail in one of two places. The first is the joint where the sashes meet, which on an older window is closed by a compressed weatherstrip that has long since flattened out. The second is the perimeter of the insulated glass unit, where a broken seal lets moisture into the space between the panes and leaves the permanent haze you see on twenty-year-old double-pane windows.
Both are engineered against directly. The sashes on a Windows USA unit interlock rather than resting against each other, forming a continuous mechanical seal along the meeting rail instead of relying on a material that has to stay springy for thirty years. Intercept® Ultra spacers hold the two panes as a single airtight assembly, so moisture never reaches the space between them and the argon fill stays where it belongs. And weep holes, small deliberate openings in the bottom of the frame, give any water that does get past the exterior a designed route back outside rather than a low spot to stand in against your framing and drywall.
Humidity works on the rest of the window too. Wood sash absorbs it, swells, binds in the frame, then shrinks and opens gaps when the air dries out, and that cycle is what eventually splits a rail and loosens the glazing. Multi-chambered virgin vinyl does not take on moisture at all, which is why it holds its geometry and its seal in a climate that spends a good part of the year damp.
Spring Storms, and an Honest Account of the Limits
This part of Kansas sits inside the corridor the NOAA Storm Prediction Center (opens in a new tab) watches most carefully from March through June, and the National Weather Service Storm Prediction Center tornado record (opens in a new tab) for the region is long. Nobody who lives here needs that explained.
So let us be direct about what a window is and is not. A replacement window is not storm protection. Nothing installed in a residential opening survives a direct hit from a violent tornado, and a company that implies otherwise is selling a promise it cannot keep. We would rather say that plainly than let you buy for the wrong reason.
What a well-built window honestly changes is how the house handles everything surrounding those rare events, which is where essentially all of the actual weather lives. Hail rattling off the west wall. Outflow winds running well ahead of a squall line and loading the whole envelope at once. Rain driven horizontally into a frame that was never designed to shed water arriving from that direction, several times every spring. That is a sealing and drainage problem rather than an impact problem, and it is one a properly built window genuinely solves.
ENERGY STAR Certified Options in a Two-Season Climate
Windows USA offers ENERGY STAR (opens in a new tab) certified options, and the program puts the case for replacement in one sentence: "Replacing old windows with ENERGY STAR certified windows lowers household energy bills by an average of up to 13 percent nationwide when replacing single-pane windows. Lower energy consumption also reduces greenhouse gas emissions from power plants and homes."
Southeast Kansas collects on that in both seasons. The cooling-season half matters more here than it does farther north and west, because humid heat is harder work for an air conditioner: the unit is not only lowering the temperature of the air but pulling moisture out of it, and every bit of solar heat the coated glass turns away before it enters the room is load the compressor never takes on. The heating-season half is real too, since winter here is a genuine one, and conditioned air leaking out through a rail that quit sealing years ago is a bigger share of a January bill than most homeowners would guess.
There is a comfort payoff on the winter side that people rarely anticipate. Glass with a low-emissivity coating and argon behind it runs warmer on its interior surface, and a warmer pane does not pull the moisture out of indoor air and collect it. In a humid house that is the difference between sills that stay dry all winter and sills that run with water every cold morning until the paint below them stains.

What Ultraviolet Does While You Are Not Watching
Sunlight does two jobs on a house, and only one of them is visible. The CDC tracks (opens in a new tab) the Average Daily Dose of Ultraviolet (UV) light (opens in a new tab) nationally, and the ultraviolet portion works on three separate things at once.
It reaches the people in the room first. The International Ultraviolet Association (opens in a new tab) notes that ordinary window glass is no barrier to UVA, which the Skin Cancer Foundation (opens in a new tab) identifies as a main cause of premature skin aging. It bleaches the contents of the room second, steadily fading furniture, fabrics, flooring, and artwork & photos (opens in a new tab) on the sunny side of the house. And it works on the window itself: ultraviolet wavelengths penetrate solid materials (opens in a new tab), and unprotected vinyl suffers mechanical, physical and chemical degradation from solar radiation (opens in a new tab) that surfaces as cracking, chalking (opens in a new tab), color shift, and lost strength.
There is an answer for each. A UV inhibitor is compounded into the vinyl of our windows and patio doors, so the frames hold their color rather than fading, flaking, or peeling. The Cardinal Low-E 366 glass (opens in a new tab) blocks 95% of ultraviolet light while daylight still fills the room, which is the meaningful difference between a low-emissivity coating and the tinted glass sometimes sold for sunny exposures: tint cuts heat by darkening the view, while the coating rejects the heat and leaves the light alone.

Which openings carry the heaviest share of that depends on which way they face, and the U.S. Department of Energy (opens in a new tab) reduces the question to a grid worth reading before you place an order:

A College Town's Housing, and Why Stock Sizes Do Not Fit It
Pittsburg State has been part of this town since the beginning of the last century, and a university reshapes a housing market in a particular way. The older neighborhoods around campus hold large early-twentieth-century houses that have been divided, re-let, patched, and remodeled repeatedly across a hundred years of tenants. Deferred work accumulates in a house like that, and windows are usually near the bottom of the list because they are the one component that keeps sort of working long after it has stopped working properly.
Meanwhile the rest of the market runs the full range: mining-era cottages in Frontenac, brick and frame homes in Girard and Fort Scott, post-war ranches on the newer edges of town, and farmhouses on their own ground between all of them.
What every one of those has in common is that the openings have moved. A frame standing on southeast Kansas ground for eighty or a hundred years has settled, and settling does not happen evenly. An opening that left the carpenter square is rarely square now, sills have taken a pitch, and at least one previous remodel has been built around the result. That is exactly why nothing we install comes off a shelf in a stock size. Every window is manufactured at our plant in Hot Springs, Arkansas, to the measurements our representative takes at your address. Stock units shimmed into an out-of-square opening leave gaps that get packed with foam and hidden behind trim, and those gaps are where the next twenty years of air leaks and water intrusion begin.
We Build Them, We Set Them, and We Answer for Them
Windows USA manufactures, sells, and installs. That combination is unusual in this trade, and it is the reason we can answer for the entire job. The windows going into your Pittsburg home are built on our own line in Arkansas rather than imported and rebranded, and they are set by professional installers. When the company that built the window also stands behind it, a warranty question has exactly one place to go, and the lifetime limited warranty is transferable, so it follows the house to whoever buys it next.
It is also the reason factory-direct pricing is possible at all. A typical window quote carries an importer's margin, a distributor's margin, and a dealer's margin stacked on top of the actual cost of the product. Removing all three is not a promotion; it is simply what the arithmetic looks like when nobody is standing in between. Nearly 60 years of operating history and more than 200,000 homeowners sit behind that work.
Crews cover Pittsburg and the surrounding southeast Kansas communities, including Frontenac, Girard, Fort Scott, Parsons, and Baxter Springs.
Life in the House After the Old Sash Is Gone
If your house still has its original single-pane windows, they are the largest hole in its thermal envelope, and in a climate with a humid summer and a real winter they cost you in both directions every month of the year. Replacing them settles several long-running complaints at once. The rooms that never held temperature start holding it, which is almost always the first thing homeowners report. The sash opens and closes with one hand instead of a shoulder, and it locks. Water stops standing in the sill after a spring storm, because the frame now has somewhere to send it. Two sealed panes with argon between them take the edge off street and neighborhood noise, something the Environmental Protection Agency (opens in a new tab) treats as a health matter rather than a comfort one. And vinyl frames will not warp, rot, corrode, or need scraping and repainting the way a century-old wood sash did every few years.
The estimate that tells you what any of that costs at your address is free, and it comes with no obligation attached.

Local FAQ
Window Replacement Questions in Pittsburg
We quote by the project rather than by a headline per-window figure, because the variables genuinely move the total: how many openings you are doing, their dimensions, the styles and glass you select, and what condition the framing is in once the old units are out. A century-old house near the college with tall original sash is not the same job as a 1970s ranch with eight standard sliders. Book a free in-home estimate and you get the real number for your address, in writing, with nothing owed either way.
This corner of the state is wetter and more humid than the rest of Kansas, and it still runs a full heating season, so the priorities are water management and two-way insulation. Ours use interlocking sashes that form one continuous seal at the meeting rail, weep-hole drainage that routes water back outside, Intercept® Ultra spacers keeping the glass unit airtight, argon fill, and Cardinal Low-E 366 glass whose triple-layer coating turns away solar heat without darkening the room. See how they are built.
ENERGY STAR reports that replacing single-pane windows with certified ones lowers household energy bills by an average of up to 13 percent nationwide, and Windows USA offers ENERGY STAR certified options. In a Pittsburg house the benefit shows up across both halves of the calendar, since the coating and argon fill that keep humid summer heat outside are the same ones keeping furnace heat inside once the weather turns.
A representative visits at no charge and measures every opening individually, then walks you through styles, glass packages, and hardware. Your order goes to our Arkansas manufacturing plant and is built to those exact dimensions. When it is ready, professional installation crews pull the old units, set and seal the new ones, and clean up behind themselves. A transferable lifetime limited warranty covers the finished work, and the process page lays out each step.
We install in Pittsburg and across the surrounding mining-country towns, including Frontenac, Girard, Fort Scott, Parsons, and Baxter Springs. Coverage runs statewide, so see the Kansas page for other markets or the locations page for the whole footprint. Towns we do not list by name are usually still worth asking about.
